What We Do
What is a Land Trust?
Land trusts are local, state, or regional non-profit organizations directly involved in protecting land for its natural, recreational, scenic, historical or productive value. Most land trusts are private, non-profit corporations.
OCT acquires deeded ownership of land through outright gift, "bargain sales" (purchases below market value), or neighborhood-driven fundraising and purchase.
OCT also provides technical assistance to Orleans' community members who identify parcels for preservation, to land owners who wish to consider land preservation options, such as a private conservation restriction, to Town boards and committees on open space issues, and to realtors and developers who want information about setting aside land as open space.
OCT is the steward of over 625 acres of land under our protection. We also provide educational and volunteer opportunities for our growing membership.
What We Protect
Orleans Conservation Trust holds wildlife habitat, scenic views, wetlands, sensitive watershed parcels, forests and other valuable open space, in its natural state, in perpetuity for the benefit of the community and future generations. .
